Hazleton Police Department Legendary German Shepherd K-9 "GRIZ" Dies at Age 11


The Hazleton Police Department has announced that one of it's police dogs has died from medical complications after undergoing surgery. He sufferred from an infection, which created medical complications.

Griz was an 11 year old German Shepherd k-9 officer with Hazleton Police since November of 2005.

Griz, badge # K-11, was assigned to Corporal Kirk Wetzel. “Griz was an outstanding partner and companion; his absence will be a tremendous void.” Wetzel stated.

Griz was trained in Patrol and Narcotics Detection. He responded to throusands of calls for service in his 11 years with the Hazleton Police.

Mayor Jeff Cusat stated “As Mayor, Griz was an essential part of the department and truly an officer in every sense of the word that will be missed by us all.”

A plaque is being made to honor Griz's service, and a ceremony will be planned where his badge and Identification will be retired. Chief Jerry Speziale has stated “Griz served the department and residents for over a decade and will receive the appropriate honors.”
