Paving Project Set For City, Handicap Ramps May Slow Paving

Approximately 60 roadways have been identified for an upcoming paving project in Hazleton.

Approximately $727,000 in Federal Community Development and State Liquid Fuels funds will be used by the city for the list of streets and alleys.

However, Hazleton City Highway Department Foreman Frank Vito has stated that handicap-accessible curb ramps will need to come first, with the construction of these ramps most likely being contracted out based on bids.

State and local governments are required to make pedestrian crossings accessible to people with disabilities.

Studded areas must also be placed at these intersections under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Approximately 60% of the city's funds for street restoration will be used for the required curb ramps.

It is expected that a majority of the paving would take place in 2017, after the required handicapped ramps are funded.
