Further Details On Man Who Had Shot Into Occupied Vehicle

At approximately 2:19 am, Hazleton Police officers recieved a report of shots fired in the area of 1st and Vine Streets.

Officers determined that Joseph Pitts, 28 of Hazleton, had fired three rounds into a vehicle occupied by an adult male and adult female.

Pitts was taken into custody at approximately 4 am at his home in the area of 5th and Carson in Hazleton city following an investigation by Hazleton City Police.

Pitts was charged with two counts of F1 Aggravated Assault, two counts of F2 Aggravated Assault, two counts M2 Simple Assault, M1 Propulsion of Missiles, two counts of M2 Recklessly Endangering Another Person, M Criminal Mischief, F2 Persons Not To Possess A Firearm, F3 Persons Not To Possess A Firearm, and M1 Firearms Not To Be Carried Without A License.

UPDATES:

Magistrate Zola assigned $500,000 bail to Pitts, who has remained in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for January 13th.

Investigation by Hazleton News 1 has not recovered any further Pennsylvania criminal charges which would merrit the "Persons Not To Possess A Firearm" charge. A criminal history from other states could not be found.

Generally, an individual is not legally allowed to possess a firearm if they have been found guilty of a felony, or if they have been involuntarily committed to a phychiatric hospital.
