Multiple Reports Of Door-To-Door Energy Salesmen

Many area residents have reported individuals with and without identification coming to their door in an attempt to sell energy.

The individuals have asked for varying amounts of information per reports. Some reports state that the individuals want to see previous PPL bills. Others state that the individuals ask to see social security and other forms of identification.

In the month of December, reports have come in from Hazleton city, West Hazleton, Freeland, and Butler Township about the door-to-door energy sales.

Freeland Police have released this statement earlier in the year:

PPL is reinforcing some key points about its business and its employees and contractors:

  • PPL does not engage in telemarketing or door-to-door sales for the purpose of encouraging residential customers to switch energy suppliers.

  • PPL may contact you by phone about your account or service in the event there's a problem with your service. In addition, virtually all visits to customer homes by PPL Electric Utilities or contractors are prearranged by the customer or through a call to the customer.

  • All of PPL employees and contractors must carry company-issued identification. If someone claiming to be from PPL Electric Utilities comes to your door, ask to see this identification. Keep in mind nearly all service employees also wear company uniforms and drive marked company vehicles.

If you ever have any doubts about a caller or visitor claiming to represent PPL Electric Utilities, or about the information you are being asked to provide, please call 1-800-DIAL-PPL (1-800-342-5775) for verification and remember to call your local police department if things don't check out.

Consumers are also asked to file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office or thePennsylvania Public Utility Commission if they encounter this type of solicitation.

Suppliers licensed by the state may use agents to conduct door-to-door or telephone marketing or sales activities. Their activities must comply with federal, state and municipal laws and regulations.
